FOOD
ONLY PURCHASE PET FOOD AT THE GROCERY STORE
Do not take dog food advice from a sales clerk, as this breed has specific requirements that are unknown to most in the animal industry.
Grocery Stores are accustomed to taking proper care of human food, and they will treat the dog food with more care, protecting it from insecticides, rodents, temperature extremes, etc., than pet supply stores and discount houses. Please do not purchase pet food at a pet supply store, or discount store.
TWO FOODS, MIXED TOGETHER:
1. PURINA O.N.E. ORIGINAL, CHICKEN, or LAMB. DO NOT GET NOT BEEF. Do not get the puppy food. Also, use only dry food. No canned food.
2. BENEFUL ORIGINAL Do not get the puppy food. Also, use only dry food. No canned food.
Mix the two foods half and half, until the pups is one year old, then feed only BENEFUL.
PURINA O.N.E. is too high in protein to feed, as the main food, after one year of age. We used to feed EUKANUBA, but have changed to a lower protein in the interest of protecting their kidneys from an overload of protein. Toy Dogs do not need as much protein as large dogs. EUKANUBA will not harm a pup, for a short period, as it does not have calcium in it, but since the pups do not like it, and it is really too high in protein for them, we do not feed it now.
The Purina O.N.E. & Beneful are not PUPPY FOOD. Both products are made by Purina, which is produced 24/7 with U.S.D.A. on site to inspect the meat that is procured.
Many other brands of dog food, particularly the expensive designer foods, may only produce the dog food bi-monthly [or less often], and they frequently do not have U.S.D.A. on site to inspect the meat that is procured. Some of the top dog food manufacturers have been caught adding diseased meat, saw dust, and even road kill to their food. Some studies have indicated that some of that food has worm/parasite eggs in it that can harm your pet.
Do not use puppy food. Puppy foods sometimes have too much protein, and they usually have calcium in them. Too much protein is not good for their kidneys. Calcium can be particularly harmful to toy breed puppies. Calcium in puppy food can cause bone disease, when given to puppies that are toy dogs.
Wet the food for one week after the pup's arrival at your home. Use equal parts food and water.
Changing food can kill the puppy. Yes, really! Changing food, too many treats, and table food, can cause diarrhea, and dehydration. Little pups have very little body fat and dehydration can occur very rapidly. The little pups have a short window in which you can remediate severe dehydration. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Please feed your pup according to this information, as we want you to be successful with your new family member!
Free Feed for one week or so, before putting the pup on a feeding schedule. Please see: "New Pup Primer".
DO NOT TAKE DOG FOOD ADVICE FROM PET STORE SALES PEOPLE.
Metal Bowls
Do not use aluminum bowls, as it will poison the food. Some of the trays that are available are aluminum. Do not use breakable dishes as the pups like to carry the dishes around, and they may do it without your permission when you are not looking. Of course, when they get to where they are going they will plop it down, on the patio. SPLAT! Metal bowls are much easier. Buy 4 or more, as you cannot have too many. Some treats work better in bowls.

| STOP PURCHASING ALL DOG TREATS! Now that China is involved in the manufacturing, and packaging, of ingredients and products for dogs we recommend that all consumers stop purchasing ALL DOG TREATS! China is well known to produce products that have melamine in them. As you may know, many such products have harmed and killed humans and animals alike. Please give only the treats listed below to your toy dog. Many contain bacteria. They are not inspected. |

Pressure Cooker Chicken & Chicken Broth Please read warning about feeding too much fat and calcium
Whole Chicken 2 - 2 1/2 qts. water
Cover Chicken with water. Cook 28 minutes in Pressure Cooker. Cool 5 min., naturally. Cool pan under water. Open and Store/Use Chicken. Store broth in freezer bag that has been placed in a 2 qt. pitcher. Let it cool before placing it in the bag. Remove pitcher after frozen. Freeze and Use when desired.
We use the chicken in soup, and we give tiny bits to the dog. Remember, that the dog can only consume 1 tablespoon of chopped chicken, not one half cup of chopped chicken. MODERATION IS THE KEY.
Dog should only have 1 tablespoon of chopped chicken twice a week!
IF YOU CANNOT BE MODERATE PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THIS TO THE DOG AS YOU CAN KILL HIM AT A YOUNG AGE WITH FAT.
Remove bones, skin and fat before giving chicken to your dog. You can freeze your dog's servings in small baggies in one tablespoon serving size.
Feeding broth: The fat is very harmful and can cause pancreatitis, so, be sure to give the dog only 1 tablespoon of broth, without the fat. We prefer to make a more healthy broth for the dog from the bones of the chicken. We will use the chicken, and broth, and in soup, etc.
There is a very mild, low sodium dog friendly soup recipe below. We typically make human soup from the chicken broth, not the bone broth. The bone broth is milder and has more calcium in it. Calcium should not be given in large quantities until the puppy is about 1 - 1 1/2 years old. Too much calcium can cause bone disease when given to Havanese little puppies.
I have included these recipes as many people have older dogs and other breeds that can use this. Havanese can have it occasionally and in small, very small, quantities. They love it but do not kill your dog giving him lots of it. Remember he is only 1/15, or so, of the size you are. Keep in mind that you can consume a medium size bowl, and that he is only about 1/15th your size, so, he will be unable to eat more than a small amount and stay healthy. Additionally, dogs cannot get rid of fat that goes into their system as easily as humans. It can literally kill them! Since, he cannot process fat well, it ends up layering across his internal organs. Too much fat can kill him. USE THIS RECIPE AND ALL OTHER SNACKS WITH CAUTION AND VERY MODERATELY!
Chicken Broth From Bones
You can freeze bones from cooked chicken, until you are ready to use them.
This is a very inexpensive way to provide calcium and protein to your dog with an item that would just be thrown away.
Whole Chicken Bones With Some Skin 2 - 2 1/2 qts. water
Pressure cook bones. Cook without onions as you will remember that onions causes hemolytic anemia in dogs. Sometimes the disease does not show up until months later. Pressure cook bones and water for 1 hr. at 15 PSI. Cool naturally 5 minutes. Cool pan under water. Open and strain broth well. Remember, that your dog cannot digest bones, and will get choked on them. Bones can even puncture your dog's intestines. Strain the broth well.
Mild Dog-Friendly Chicken Soup
2 qts. Broth From Bones. Be sure to strain the broth well. 2 cans whole kernel corn, drained 2 cans chopped tomatoes, without onions Little Salt 1 can Italian cut green beans 2-43 cups chopped chicken, without skin Hand full of cooked and chopped spaghetti, or 2 cups cooked rice
Cook corn and tomatoes in broth in pressure cooker for 30 minutes. Cool naturally for 5 minutes and then cool with water over the pan. Open. Add Beans, spaghetti or rice and chicken. Stir and either serve or freeze.
A spoonful of this twice a week will not hurt the dog. You can freeze individual servings of it in small baggies so he can have a treat when you are ready to give it to him. PLEASE, DO NOT give him a bowl of this soup. Remember, an adult human will eat a bowl of it, and your dog only weighs about 12 lbs., whereas you weigh about 120 lbs.+. Please do not give him a whole bowl of this as that much can harm him. He weighs a small fraction of what you weigh like about 1/15th of what you weigh. Please, he only needs a spoonful of this at any given time. He can have a tablespoon ful of it twice a week.
One recipe, if frozen, will last your dog a very long time.
