BELOVED HAVANESE SHOT RECORD & HEALTH NOTES
HAVANESE Breed Delivery date DOB Color Female Microchip # if chipped Shot dates: All Shots Given Were Duramune 5 Way Shots
Worming dates, Panacur 8 weeks Drontal Plus at 12 weeks. Thereafter, once a year, Drontal Plus [a prescription pill wormer from vet]
Next shot date: Dates of subsequent shots
There is a lot of controversy on shots. Generally the old way was: Shots should be given every 3 weeks until 21- 24 weeks of age, and then once a year. Many vax at 6 weeks, while others say little to no immunity is created at that early age, and that the early shot may, in fact, block the later shots.
Additionally. the alternative protocol is: Many Vets are following a new protocol of three shots, at ages: 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks and then one after 6 months of age. Some give shots every 3 weeks to assure protection until 5 months. Thereafter one at 18 months and then one every 2 years. There is great controversy on shot ages, as well as the total number of shots needed. Over vaccination is thought to be associated with autoimmune diseases later in life. Under vaccination is thought to be potentially life threatening in some areas where there is high contagion potential.
LEPTOSPIROSIS: After 14 weeks your vet may suggest 7 way shots with Leptospirosis. Many vets no longer give this shot. The second Leptospirosis shot often causes a severe allergic reaction. Sometimes, we have even wondered if malpractice insurance might impact the need to give or withhold the Leptospirosis shot. Remember, it may not adequately cover for the disease after the vax, and it carries substantial risk to your pet with 2nd vax [of allergic reaction]. The reactions can cause lifelong damage, we have seen it happen.
Rabies at 12 weeks- this is also very controversial and there are international studies set up to track the potential hazards of over vax with rabies. Many people wait until the pup is one year to vax. BORDETELLA, Kennel Cough, intranasal, at 24 weeks of age, not at the same time as another immunization. Many vets no longer give this. Some give it at a very early age. Remember, it can cause the disease and it may not adequately cover for the disease after the vax. If the pup shows any sign of cough he should be taken to the vet at once for antibiotics, if needed. If the pup gets kennel cough from the vaccine it will be a lighter case but it will still be a case of kennel cough. The pup can tansmit it to other dogs when he gets it from the vaccine. It is very problematic and can cause more trouble than it prevents. It is usually given every 6 months. The continued vaccination protocol may cause undue harm to the pup's immune system.
LYME, GIARDIA & CORONA: We only give Lyme when the vet considers it necessary for the geographic area. We do not give Corona, or Giardia.
We never give two shots at the same visit. It can cause many problems in this breed.
EAR MITES: Please see our ear care article. Ear mites are common in dogs. They do not affect humans. Most treatments should not be given until pup is about 12 weeks of age. Most of the treatments are very strong. Some, like rotenone, are very dangerous substances and are highly carcinogenic to humans. They are so dangerous that humans should not even handle the substances. We do not use these products on our pups and we suggest you never use them as well.
We have enough ear mite meds here to treat the entire southeastern US but your pup has been treated with reserve and caution, to protect his health. He has had two treatments described below. As most meds take 10 days you will please understand if he needs another few treatments for it. You should treat your pup for ear mites.
FRONTLINE SPRAY IS SOMETIMES HARD TO FIND. We use Frontline Spray for ear mites, available at http://www.jefferspet.com/ Jeffers sells the FRONTLINE SPRAY. Frontline makes many products so you must be sure to get the FRONTLINE SPRAY and not the FRONTLINE TOP SPOT vial that is dosed on the back. The vial is much too strong and we do not recommend it for Havanese. The spray bottle is $50 and will last for years. It kills fleas, mites, and ticks. For fleas, It will last for a month, even if bathed. YOu can respray during the month, if you think it is needed.
To use FRONTLINE SPRAY [cover his eyes with a cloth], use on a cotton swab in the ears every few days, for a week, if mites appear. Spray in a circle around outside of ear. Ear mites cause a brown crumbly substance to appear in the ears. They do not habitate humans. It can appear in 4-6 hrs. and it looks as if the ear has never been cleaned. The exudates caused by ear mites can create a medium in which bacteria can run rampant so we highly recommend you clean ears, [see ear care paper] and treat with Frontline Spray. You can spray the Frontline Spray on swabs and rub the swabs in the ear canal. You may need to do this every other day for a week. Remember ear mites do not affect humans. You do need to treat with this less strong method, though it may take longer to cure the problem, than the more dangerous meds.
Generally speaking, Spray monthly for fleas and weekly for ear mites, if you see signs of the ear mites.
Heartguard Plus is given starting at 12 weeks. We recommend this be given on the first of every month so that you can more easily remember it. Divide it to the weight/size of your pup. Do not use other Heardworm meds, they may harm your dog.
Fleas: We only use FRONTLINE SPRAY. We use only one spray down the spine, one spay on the tummy [avoiding wee wee area], and one spray on the underside of the ear flap. For ear mites we spray in a circle around the ear. We do not use it in combination with any other flea preventative. We do not use collars, shampoos, or other meds for fleas. You can use Frontline Spray monthly. You can use it more often if needed. One large bottle will last for about two years, or so. It costs about $50. It is difficult to find, but you can order it here: www.jefferspet.com Avoid combination products or products that are designed to be taken internally for several things. Combination products are too strong for this breed.
DO NOT USE: 1. REVOLUTION, heartworm & flea med, ON THIS BREED! There have been many adverse reactions. If you use this product you will void your health guarantee. This is a combo product. Many have had seizures from Revolution. It is much too strong for these dogs. 2. PROHEART on this dog. There are many cases of seizures and severe reactions. Less is better in this breed. Do not use slow release chemicals like Proheart. 3. SENTINEL 4. INTECEPTOR
We bath with baby shampoo, weekly. Baby shampoo is better than all the expensive shampoos you can buy. It will not hurt his eyes and it rinses out easily. Make sure you use a Baby Shampoo that has no conditoners, or detanglers in it. Remove all ear hair, every 2 weeks. Trim all hair below tail and around wee wee area, every 2 weeks. We wash the wee wee area daily with a cloth, or baby wipe. We put a bit of baby powder on the pup occasionally. GROOMERS CANNOT DO THIS [remove ear hair] AS WELL AS YOU CAN, IF IT IS HARD FOR YOU, HOW HARD WILL IT BE FOR THE GROOMER! THE PUPS TAKEN TO GROOMERS OFTEN GET HURT. GROOMERS DO NOT ALWAYS RINSE PUPS WELL, WHICH CAN CAUSE ITCHING & SCRATCHING.
We do not use a collar & leash, as they can harm pup's neck & back. There are many accounts of pups with life long trachea damage and early death from the problems arising from one or two yanks on their collar/leash by a child. The Havanese can pull against the leash hard enough to harm his neck without any pulling from the person holding the leash. We ONLY use a halter and leash. We never let the pup run in an unconfined area.
If you give this puppy table food you can kill him with an immediate and acute attack of pancreatitis.
We recommend that you only use Purina O.N.E. Original food, mixed half and half with Beneful Original. We use this until the pup is 1 year of age. After one year of age we recommend you use Beneful Adult Original only. Both foods are available at the grocery store.
Food: We recommend that you only use Beneful Original mixed with Purina O.N.E. Mix it half and half, and wet it for the first week or two. Get ADULT food for your puppy. Puppy food has Puppy written on the bag, but ADULT food does not specify ADULT. We use ADULT to avoid extra calcium, which can cause bone disease in toy dog puppies. Both foods can be purchased at the grocery store. Grocery stores are more accustomed to handling food for humans and they protect the food from temperatuire extremes, rodents and insecticides. We prefer to purchase at grocery stores because they are accomplished in handling human food. The safety standards for handling human food far exceed the safety standards for handling pet food.
Wet the food for the first week or two after you get the puppy. Keep pup on free feeding [or all day feeding], for the first few days. Remove food at about 4:00 in the afternoon, if possible. See Pup Primer for more info.
Please take pup in carry crate to vet and Please cover opening with towel. Do not set pup crate down till you get to exam room. Sterilize table first, before setting the pup on the table. You should clean the table yourself with the product in the exam room. Then, do not let them take the pup around the clinic or let staff or techs hold the pup. Let only the vet touch the pup, and please do not let anyone hold the pup close to their clothing.
MICROCHIP: Please see our links on Microchip toxicity. They are controversial at best. Pet Trac 800 336-2843.
Microchips migrate, stop working and may be associated with tumors, cancer and autoimmune disease. Are they worth it? We are not sure. We have seen dogs returned due to the chip [only a few in 20 years], and we have seen many fatty tumors, and migrations. Many have stopped working as well.
You can contact Avid directly to get a form to register the pup in your name. The pup will be tracked back to me if you do not register him with Avid. Pet trac 800 336 2840
Your pup may have been microchipped with the AVID microchip. It is on his back in the scapula region, between the shoulder blades. It is about the size of several large grains of rice. There are several types of chips and they sometimes migrate to other regions of the body. It is used as a means of identification for the pup. If he is lost and then found by animal control or a shelter, they will, hopefully, scan him and call AVID, which will provide your name as the owner of the dog. There are many types of microchips, and not all shelters use scanners. One scanner will not work for other chips often and most shelters do not take the time to use more than one scanner. Chips migrate, stop working and have been said to cause fatty tumors.
Please register your pup's microchip. The cost is $12.50. If you move or change your phone no. it is very important that you update your contact information with the AVID ID Pet Trac department of AVID. http://www.avidid.com
